Hà Nội

Hà Nội (tiếng Việt: Hà Nội), thủ đô của Việt Nam và là thành phố lớn thứ hai cả nước, là sự pha trộn hấp dẫn giữa Đông và Tây — với dấu ấn văn hóa Trung Hoa từ hàng thế kỷ đô hộ, và chất je ne sais quoi Pháp từ thời thuộc địa. Thành phố này hầu như không bị ảnh hưởng bởi làn sóng kiến trúc hiện đại thô cứng của thập niên 1970–80, và hiện đang trải qua giai đoạn chuyển mình mạnh mẽ, vươn lên trở thành ngôi sao đang lên của Đông Nam Á.

Tổng quan

Dù từ phương nào kéo đến, các thế lực xâm lược đều đồng ý: Hà Nội xứng đáng là kinh đô. Danh hiệu ấy đã gắn với thành phố hơn một nghìn năm, trải qua bao cuộc xâm lăng, chiếm đóng, phục hưng và đổi tên. Năm 1408, quân Minh chiếm thành Đại La và đặt tên là Đông Quan. Năm 1428, Lê Lợi đánh đuổi quân xâm lược và đặt tên là Lê Thái Tổ (黎太祖). Công lao ấy mang lại cho ông ngôi báu và cả một kho truyền thuyết về những chiến tích hào hùng, phần lớn gắn với Hồ Hoàn Kiếm. Triều Nguyễn đặt tên thành phố là Hà Nội vào năm 1831, nhưng lúc đó quyền lực đã chuyển về Huế. Huế giữ vị trí kinh đô cho đến năm 1887, khi Pháp chọn Hà Nội làm thủ phủ toàn cõi Đông Dương. Năm 1954, thành phố được trao lại cho Hồ Chí Minh và Việt Minh sau gần một thập kỷ kháng chiến, trở thành thủ đô nước Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa. Đến năm 1975, sau ngày thống nhất, Hà Nội trở thành thủ đô của cả nước. (Xem thêm: Các cuộc chiến tranh Đông Dương).

Dù trải qua bao biến cố chiến tranh, Hà Nội vẫn giữ được nhiều nét duyên dáng của thời thuộc địa. Chính những năm tháng chiến tranh đã vô tình bảo tồn thành phố khỏi kiến trúc hiện đại, khiến hầu hết các tòa nhà trung tâm không cao quá năm tầng. Phố cổ — khu vực xung quanh và phía bắc Hồ Hoàn Kiếm — chỉ đứng sau Hội An về những dãy phố thuộc địa và tiền thuộc địa còn nguyên vẹn, ẩn sâu trong mê cung ngõ nhỏ chật hẹp mà đầy khí quyển.

Các trường đại học theo mô hình phương Tây đầu tiên của Việt Nam được thành lập tại Hà Nội, và ngày nay thành phố vẫn là trung tâm nghiên cứu khoa học hàng đầu cả nước. So với sự sôi động ồn ào của TP. Hồ Chí Minh ở phía Nam, Hà Nội có một vẻ đẹp trầm lắng và tinh tế hơn — đáng để ở thêm một, hai ngày; và với vô số lựa chọn di chuyển cùng các đại lý lữ hành, đây là điểm xuất phát lý tưởng để khám phá miền Bắc.

Khi đi trên đường, bạn có thể thấy người dân địa phương hay bắt chuyện với người lạ — đó là nét văn hóa bình thường ở đây. Họ có thể hỏi bạn đến từ đâu hay những câu hỏi thông thường. Tuy nhiên nếu là nam giới, hãy cẩn thận nếu một cô gái trẻ lạ mặt chủ động tiếp cận và bắt chuyện — đôi khi có mục đích khác. Có thể mất một lúc để quen với sự thân thiện khá thẳng thắn này, nhưng đó cũng là một trải nghiệm văn hóa thú vị.

Xung quanh phố cổ có một số quầy thông tin tự phục vụ, nhưng chủ yếu mang tính trưng bày hơn là thực sự hữu ích.

Khí hậu

Tết Nguyên Đán thường rơi vào khoảng cuối tháng Giêng đến ngày 20 tháng 2. Năm 2026, Tết kéo dài 9 ngày, từ ngày 14 đến 22 tháng 2.

Vào mùa xuân, hoa nở đẹp nhất trong thời gian này. Thời tiết ấm dần, thỉnh thoảng có những cơn mưa phùn nhẹ trong tuần. Người dân địa phương tin rằng những cơn mưa nhỏ này mang lại may mắn và thịnh vượng cho năm mới.

Mùa hè ngược lại, gần như không chịu nổi. Nóng nực đã đành, lại thêm độ ẩm cao ngột ngạt và những cơn mưa rào đột ngột. Trong mùa này, du khách cần đề phòng muỗi vì chúng sinh sôi rất nhiều — Hà Nội có điều kiện lý tưởng để côn trùng phát triển.

Mùa thu là thời điểm khí hậu dễ chịu nhất, không khí khô ráo hơn, nhiệt độ hạ xuống đủ để người ta khoác lên người những chiếc áo len và áo khoác. Cây hoa sữa (“cây hoa sữa”) chỉ nở vào mùa thu, trồng dọc nhiều tuyến phố. Hương hoa rất đặc trưng; nếu bạn ghé Hà Nội vào mùa thu, hãy hỏi người dân địa phương về loài cây này và những con phố nào nên tản bộ để thưởng thức mùi hương ấy.

Mùa đông có thể khá khó chịu vì không chỉ lạnh mà còn ẩm. Nhà ở Hà Nội hầu hết không có hệ thống sưởi trung tâm — thậm chí nhiều nhà không có thiết bị sưởi nào — nên cảm giác lạnh thực tế còn hơn nhiệt độ trên nhiệt kế. Tuy nhiên, tháng 12 và tháng 1 vẫn là những tháng khô nhất trong năm, lượng mưa ít và chỉ tăng dần từ giữa tháng 2. Đáng tiếc là ô nhiễm không khí thường nặng nhất vào mùa đông, do đốt rác tràn lan, thiếu mưa để rửa trời và các dãy núi bao quanh giữ lại không khí ô nhiễm trong lòng chảo thấp — Hà Nội thường xuyên nằm trong top 5 thành phố ô nhiễm nhất thế giới trong những năm gần đây.

Có các chuyến bay quốc tế thẳng từ hầu hết các thủ đô Đông Nam Á, các thành phố lớn của Trung Quốc, Đài Loan, Hàn Quốc và Nhật Bản, cũng như từ Bali, Sydney, Melbourne, Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Istanbul, Munich, Frankfurt, Milan, Paris, và London. Hiện chưa có chuyến bay thẳng từ Bắc Mỹ — TP. Hồ Chí Minh, Đài Bắc, Seoul hoặc Tokyo thường là điểm nối chuyến thuận tiện nhất. Xe buýt công cộng và xe buýt nhanh xuất phát từ tầng đón khách tại Nhà ga Quốc tế, đường số 2, cột mốc số 2 (rẽ trái khi ra khỏi nhà ga). Từ Nhà ga Nội địa, xe xuất phát từ khu vực giữa nhà ga Vietnam Airlines và Vietjet Air.

• Xe buýt nhanh — Xe buýt 86 (45.000 đồng) chạy từ 06:20 đến 22:00, tần suất 25 phút/chuyến, mất khoảng 45 phút. Xe đi theo đường cao tốc không dừng đến khu vực Tây Hồ, sau đó dừng có chọn lọc tại bến xe Long Biên (gần phố cổ), Nhà hát Lớn, khách sạn Meliá và ga Hà Nội. Chiều từ thành phố ra sân bay, xe chạy từ 05:05 đến 21:40, xuất phát từ quầy ở phía nam ga Hà Nội.

• Xe buýt thường – Tuyến 07 (8.000 đồng) chạy từ 05:00 đến 22:00, tần suất 15 phút/chuyến, mất 60–90 phút. Xe qua cầu Thăng Long và đến khách sạn Daewoo ở phía tây Hà Nội, từ đó đi bộ thêm khoảng 1 tiếng mới đến phố cổ. Bạn có thể phải đi bộ khoảng 1 km về phía tây sân bay để bắt xe buýt số 07 nếu xe không xuất phát trước cửa nhà ga.

Vé tại sân bay được bán ở tòa nhà phía trước bãi đỗ xe mini. Bạn cũng có thể trả tiền trực tiếp cho tài xế. Giá vé người nước ngoài cao hơn người Việt (kể cả Việt kiều) vì lý do bảo hiểm. Giá niêm yết trên sticker dán thân xe. Tài xế có thể gây khó dễ nếu bạn mang nhiều hành lý, nhưng nếu kiên quyết, bạn vẫn được áp dụng mức giá thông thường.

• Taxi – Có bãi đỗ taxi ngay trước khu vực đón khách; rẽ phải từ Nhà ga Nội địa (T1) hoặc rẽ trái từ Nhà ga Quốc tế (T2). Hãy bỏ qua những người chào mời trong khu vực đến và đi thẳng ra bãi taxi — những xe họ mời thường là taxi không chính thức và rất dễ bị chặt chém. Taxi chính thức thuộc các hãng khác nhau và đều chạy đồng hồ; Mai Linh và Taxi Group là hai hãng đáng tin cậy nhất. Hãy chuẩn bị sẵn địa chỉ đích bằng tiếng Việt — khả năng tài xế hiểu địa chỉ phát âm bằng tiếng Anh là rất thấp. Nên in sẵn bản đồ vì biển tên phố ở Hà Nội rất rõ ràng ở cả hai đầu đường, giúp bạn xác định vị trí dễ hơn. Cước từ sân bay vào phố cổ khoảng 300.000–350.000 đồng (taxi Mai Linh, tháng 7/2015), quãng đường khoảng 27–28 km. Đến khu Phố Pháp hay phía nam Hồ Hoàn Kiếm có thể cao hơn chút, nhưng thường không quá 400.000 đồng. Nhiều hãng taxi, kể cả Taxi Group và ABC, chấp nhận thẻ tín dụng — hỏi trước và cho tài xế thấy thẻ. Tài xế đôi khi đề nghị giá cố định 20 USD, tức là đắt hơn khoảng 25%. Một số sẽ hét 800.000 đồng, nhất là thấy 3–4 khách nước ngoài — hãy bỏ qua. Đảm bảo đồng hồ bắt đầu chạy ngay sau khi xe lăn bánh; để kiểm tra đồng hồ có chạy đúng không, khi qua trạm thu phí sân bay (taxi được miễn phí) thì đồng hồ nên chỉ khoảng 0,7 km, và khoảng 2 km khi qua Nhà ga Nội địa. Chuyến xe vào trung tâm mất khoảng 30–40 phút qua đường cao tốc tùy theo lưu lượng giao thông. Cài ứng dụng Grab (tương đương Uber tại địa phương) rất tiện. Giá Grab vào trung tâm khoảng 300.000 đồng tùy theo nhu cầu, hoặc khoảng một nửa nếu đi xe máy — cho những ai thích mạo hiểm và chỉ mang ba lô.
• Xe đặt trước qua khách sạn – Nếu đã đặt phòng, bạn có thể nhờ khách sạn cử tài xế đón. Các khách sạn cao cấp thường cung cấp dịch vụ này và tính phí vào hóa đơn phòng.

Bằng tàu hỏa

Tàu nội địa

Tàu Thống Nhất chạy suốt tuyến vào đến TP. Hồ Chí Minh (“Sài Gòn”), dù thực ra không mấy ‘nhanh’ chút nào. Mỗi ngày có mười chuyến tàu từ TP. HCM mất 31–38 giờ, trong đó năm chuyến chạy chậm và bị các tàu nhanh hơn vượt qua — chỉ nên dùng những chuyến này cho các điểm đến phía bắc Đà Nẵng.

Cũng có tàu chạy lên phía tây bắc (trong đó có Lào Cai, điểm xuất phát để lên Sa Pa). Để lên các tàu đi hướng này, bạn phải vào khuôn viên ga qua “cổng sau” tại ga Trần Quý Cáp.

Vào mùa cao điểm, hãy mua vé càng sớm càng tốt — vé nằm có thể hết trước vài ngày. Nếu không mua được vé, thử liên hệ các đại lý du lịch — họ đôi khi vẫn còn hàng. Bạn cũng có thể thử vận may tại ga ngay trước giờ khởi hành — các đại lý còn vé sẽ rất muốn bán gấp. Tuy nhiên, các đại lý du lịch ở Hà Nội nổi tiếng có nhiều chiêu trò không hay; một số có thể tính giá cao gấp 3 lần, nên tốt nhất hãy tự ra ga hỏi giá trước khi đồng ý bất kỳ giao dịch nào.

Vé đi tất cả các điểm được bán trực tuyến tại Đường sắt Việt Nam hoặc tại các ga chính. Đã có ghi nhận về tình trạng lừa đảo khách du lịch trong và quanh khu vực ga tàu — hãy cẩn thận với những người tự nguyện giúp bạn đặt vé. Mua trực tuyến hoặc trực tiếp tại quầy vé là an toàn nhất.

Hầu hết các tàu xuất phát từ ga Hà Nội chính cho các chuyến đi từ phía nam bao gồm Huế và Nha Trang, trong khi một số tàu từ các tỉnh phía bắc và tàu quốc tế từ Trung Quốc kết thúc hành trình tại ga Gia Lâm.

Tàu quốc tế

Có chuyến tàu đêm xuất phát từ Nam Ninh lúc 18:05 (giờ Trung Quốc) qua Bằng Tường và Đồng Đăng. Vé được bán tại ga Nam Ninh, ga phía Bắc Quế Lâm, ga Sùng Tả và ga Bằng Tường.

Bằng xe buýt

Xe buýt nội địa

Có thể lên kế hoạch cho các chuyến xe đường dài trong nước bằng trang VeXeRe.com và ứng dụng của họ. Xe đường dài đến bến xe Mỹ Đình (Bến Xe Mỹ Đình) và nhiều bến khác tùy theo hãng xe.

Xe buýt công cộng từ các điểm phía nam (ví dụ: Ninh Bình, 2 tiếng, 70.000 đồng) đến bến xe Giáp Bát. Từ bến xe Giáp Bát ra phố cổ và Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, bỏ qua những người chào mời taxi và xe ôm, đi xe buýt số 8 hướng Đông Mỹ (7.000 đồng, trả trên xe). Để tìm xe, đi ra đường chính trong khuôn viên bến Giáp Bát, bạn sẽ thấy biển số hiệu các tuyến xe.

Hầu hết các hành trình xe “open tour” đều bắt đầu hoặc kết thúc ở Hà Nội, điểm tiếp theo (hoặc trước đó) là Huế (12–14 tiếng), rồi đến Hội An, Nha Trang, Đà Lạt, Mũi Né, TP. Hồ Chí Minh và các thành phố khác ở Việt Nam tùy theo hãng xe. Hầu hết dừng tại văn phòng hãng nằm ngay gần khu phố cổ và các khách sạn bụi phổ biến. Kiểm tra kỹ khi mua vé.

Xe buýt quốc tế

Nhiều hãng bán vé đi Viêng Chăn và Savannakhet ở Lào. Hãy tìm hiểu kỹ trước khi mua, vì trên tuyến này có không ít xe cũ nát và các chiêu trò lừa đảo.

Apec Travel có nhiều chuyến xe mỗi ngày từ Nam Ninh (Trung Quốc) đến văn phòng tại 55 Trần Khát Chân, phía nam trung tâm Hà Nội. Thời gian di chuyển khoảng 8 tiếng, bao gồm đổi xe và làm thủ tục qua biên giới.

Đi lại

Di chuyển trong Hà Nội là một thách thức: giao thông ùn tắc gần như suốt ngày, và hệ thống giao thông công cộng chưa theo kịp tốc độ bùng nổ của thành phố.

Bằng tàu hỏa

Tuyến Metro 2A kết nối Cát Linh (phía tây phố cổ) với Yên Nghĩa ở vùng ngoại ô phía tây nam. Tuyến Metro 3 kết nối Cầu Giấy với Nhổn ở vùng ngoại ô phía tây bắc. Hai tuyến hiện chưa thông nhau nhưng sẽ thay đổi khi đoạn ngầm giữa Cầu Giấy và ga Hà Nội hoàn thành dự kiến vào năm 2027. Tuyến Metro 2A tiện lợi để đến Vincom Mega Mall Royal City — một trong những trung tâm thương mại lớn nhất Hà Nội — nằm trong tầm đi bộ từ ga Thượng Đình.

Giá vé tính theo quãng đường, từ 8.000 đến 15.000 đồng. Bạn có thể thanh toán bằng cách chạm thẻ Mastercard hoặc Visa không tiếp xúc vào cổng soát vé, kể cả qua Apple Pay và Google Pay. Vé ngày và vé tháng bán tại quầy vé tất cả các ga. Vé lẻ và thẻ thông minh nạp tiền bán tại máy tự động ở tất cả các ga.

Bằng xe buýt

Không bị chặt chém, giá rẻ nhưng hơi khó nắm bắt lúc đầu, xe buýt Hà Nội chạy tương đối nhanh, có máy lạnh và khá thoải mái.

Cách tìm đường:

• Tải ứng dụng BusMap Hà Nội (Google Play, App Store) để tra tuyến và xem thời gian ước tính (không thật sự chính xác).
• Lấy bản đồ in có các tuyến xe buýt tại phố Tràng Tiền (phố sách gần Nhà hát Lớn).

Tìm điểm dừng xe buýt (thường có biển màu xanh) và đợi xe. Lên xe ngồi, nhân viên soát vé sẽ đến chỗ bạn. Giá vé từ 7.000 đến 12.000 đồng (cố định, tùy tuyến). Nhân viên thường có tiền thối lẻ (nhưng tốt nhất đừng đưa tờ lớn). Nếu không quen đường, hãy báo trước với nhân viên bạn muốn xuống ở đâu — họ thường rất sẵn lòng giúp. Hoặc dùng GPS điện thoại và Google Maps để theo dõi vị trí. Lưu ý rằng tắc đường có thể khiến lịch chạy xe không ổn định.

Bằng taxi

Cách di chuyển tiện nhất là dùng ứng dụng Grab (Android, iOS). Giao diện tiếng Anh rõ ràng dễ dùng, giá cố định thường rẻ hơn và có thể thanh toán bằng tiền mặt hoặc thẻ tín dụng.

Bằng taxi đồng hồ

Taxi thông thường gồm xe 4 chỗ và xe 7 chỗ. Trong nội thành, ba hãng taxi nhìn chung đáng tin cậy: CP Taxi và Hanoi Taxi đều là thương hiệu của Taxi Group, xe màu trắng; còn Mai Linh xe màu xanh lá. Taxi Nội Bài chuyên phục vụ tuyến sân bay.

Khách sạn có thể gọi hãng taxi tin cậy cho bạn và chắc chắn họ biết đích đến.

Trừ khi đặt qua ứng dụng, hãy dùng đồng hồ tính tiền; cước mở cửa là 20.000 đồng cho 2 km đầu tiên. Không cần boa nhưng tài xế vẫn vui nếu được.

Mặc cả vui vẻ và đôi khi bất đồng ngôn ngữ là chuyện bình thường. Lừa đảo thì nghiêm trọng hơn: có thể gặp đồng hồ chạy sai, đi đường vòng, lấy trộm hành lý hoặc thậm chí cướp. Và gần như tài xế nào cũng không có tiền lẻ — hãy luôn giữ sẵn tiền mệnh giá nhỏ.

Bằng xe ôm

Xe ôm có mặt ở hầu như mọi góc đường, đặc biệt trong phố cổ — không cần tìm, họ sẽ tự chào mời, vì vậy ban đầu hãy tỏ ra thờ ơ vừa phải. Bạn phải mặc cả và thống nhất giá trước khi lên xe. Luôn ghi giá ra giấy (kèm đầy đủ số 0) và được tài xế gật đầu xác nhận rõ ràng. Một cuốc 10 phút (ví dụ từ Hồ Hoàn Kiếm đến lăng Bác) không nên quá 20.000 đồng; đô la Mỹ thường được chấp nhận. Tài xế có mũ bảo hiểm phụ cho bạn.

Các chiêu lừa đảo phổ biến phổ biến ở đây là (khi bạn ra khỏi lăng với tâm trạng kính cẩn) tài xế khẳng định bạn đã nhờ anh ta đợi, và đòi hai triệu đồng.

Bằng xích lô

Hãy thỏa thuận giá trước hoặc tránh dùng xích lô. Cuối hành trình, thường có vài người kéo đến làm phiên dịch, giả vờ giúp đỡ rồi ép bạn trả theo mức giá họ đưa ra.

Bằng ô tô

Giao thông Hà Nội hết sức hỗn loạn: tắc đường gần như liên tục, và hàng đoàn xe máy, xe đạp, người đi bộ len lỏi không khác gì liều mạng. Tài xế Việt Nam thuộc hàng lái xe hung hăng nhất thế giới, và làn đường gần như không tồn tại. Vì vậy, không khuyến khích tự lái xe, và bạn nên để việc di chuyển trong tay những người có kinh nghiệm.

Bằng xe máy

Xe máy có thể thuê với giá khoảng 6–7 USD/ngày, hầu hết khách sạn đều có thể sắp xếp. Đây là lựa chọn tốt để di chuyển nhiều chuyến trong thành phố cho một hoặc hai người, nhưng cần lưu ý: giao thông Hà Nội không phải chỗ để học lái xe máy. Đỗ xe lên vỉa hè cùng các xe khác và nhớ khóa bánh trước. Người dân địa phương sẽ giúp sắp xếp xe trước cửa hàng của họ. Nhiều nơi có người trông xe và sẽ đưa cho bạn một tấm phiếu đổi lấy việc gửi xe — có thể mất phí hoặc không. Phiếu có thể ghi biển số xe bạn, hoặc được đánh số trùng với số viết phấn lên xe. Trong trường hợp được phát phiếu, người trông xe có thể yêu cầu bạn không khóa lái hoặc bánh trước để họ dễ di chuyển sắp xếp xe. Giữ phiếu cẩn thận — không hiếm chuyện người ta cố tính tiền khách hai lần. Nếu định đi xa khỏi thành phố, tốt nhất đừng tiết lộ điều này khi thuê xe. Cước thuê ngoại thành có thể cao gấp đôi cước nội thành, dù bạn thuê lâu hơn vì quãng đường dài hơn.

Đi bộ

Đây là cách tốt nhất để khám phá mê cung phố nhỏ trong phố cổ và ven Hồ Hoàn Kiếm (không có xe cộ vào cuối tuần). Từ đó đi bộ khoảng 1,5 km đến khu lăng Bác, 2 km đến Hồ Tây; tuân thủ quy tắc giao thông như người địa phương.

Trong hai cây cầu bắc qua sông Hồng, cầu phía nam (Chương Dương) chỉ dành cho xe cơ giới và không có vỉa hè. Cầu phía bắc (Long Biên) dành cho tàu hỏa, xe đạp, xe máy và người đi bộ. Công trình hơn trăm tuổi đáng kinh ngạc này dài gần 2 km và kết nối với một cồn đất giữa sông có các vườn nhỏ. Cầu từng là mục tiêu ném bom nhiều lần trong chiến tranh chống Mỹ nhưng được sửa chữa rất nhanh, trở thành biểu tượng sức bền của dân tộc. Nay cầu đã mục rỉ nhiều — lẽ ra đã được thay thế từ lâu nếu không mang giá trị lịch sử — với mặt vỉa hè lát bằng những tấm bê tông mỏng có khe hở có thể nhìn thấy dòng sông bên dưới. Đi bộ qua cầu không dành cho người yếu tim.

No talking, revealing clothing (shorts should be knee length and no exposed shoulders), or other signs of disrespect allowed while viewing; photos are allowed only from outside, in the grand Ba Dinh Square. Purses are allowed into the tomb, but expect them to be searched by several bored soldiers along the way. Left luggage is handled in a complicated scheme: there is an office near the street for large bags, with separate windows for Vietnamese and foreigners, and a further office for cameras, which will be transported to a third office right outside the exit of the mausoleum. Items checked in at the first office, however, will stay there. The mausoleum is closed for a couple months around the end of the year, when the body is taken abroad for maintenance. It is closed in the afternoons for maintenance.

The building, completed in 1990, is intended to evoke a white lotus. Some photos and old letters are on display on the second floor, but the main exhibition space is on the third floor. It includes cars crashing through walls to represent the chaos of post-war American capitalism, soldiers charging around with bombs that looked like electric plugs, a cave hideout re-imagined as the inside of Ho Chi Minh’s brain, and several other postmodern confections integrated with the detailed main story of the man’s life and his country’s struggle. There are plenty of photographs, prison documents and newspaper cuttings tracing his life along the way. The tour ends with a burnt bridge signifying the separation of Vietnam, followed by a reconstructed bridge showing the unification of Vietnam after the war. One of the more informative museums in Vietnam. Free guides are available in English, French, Chinese and Russian. The displays are labelled in English and French.

The nicely landscaped complex includes Ho Chi Minh’s two homes (one a small one-story house, the other a traditional stilt house), kept shiny and “as he left them” by the authorities, as well as a garage with two of Ho’s presidential cars and a carp-filled pond. You also get to see Ho Chi Minh’s work room and Politburo meeting room. The Presidential Palace is nearby, but it’s not open to visitors. Pamphlets are available in English, Chinese, French and Korean. Guided tours are usually available if you wait.

This museum gives a very informed and detailed account of the Vietnamese struggle against first the French (starting in 1858—on the first floor), then against the US, ending on 30 Apr 1975 (on the ground floor). It is housed in a colonial French building which was completed in 1932. The building, designed by the architect Ernest Hébrard is considered as a successful blend between the colonial French architecture and traditional Vietnamese architecture, called Indochina architecture. He created double-walls and balconies for a natural ventilation system and protection from sunshine.

Now the largest and most modern museum in all of Vietnam, the imposing main building covers the country’s military history extending back some two millennia. All museum exhibits and videos are captioned in Vietnamese and English. The vast courtyard houses dozens of military vehicles, aircraft and artillery; many of which are French, American and South Vietnamese assets captured in the Indochina wars. Extremely popular with locals, the museum is usually completely packed on weekends, with dozens of tour buses ferrying out-of-town visitors to the site. Peak queuing times can exceed an hour as a result, so try to visit early on a weekday if possible; give the museum a call beforehand to check how busy it is.

🧭 21.028889,105.8525 A pleasant park in the centre of town, an easy walk from anywhere in the Old Quarter. This is the locals’ favorite leisure spot; especially during weekends, when the lakeside streets are closed to traffic and becomes a pedestrian-only area. A great place to watch people practising tai chi in the morning or to sit and read in the afternoon. At weekends the park becomes even more popular as the normally busy road around it is pedestrianised, and instead filled with children driving electric cars or riding hoverboards. Hoàn Kiếm means “returned sword”, and the name comes from a legend in which King Lê Lợi was given a magical sword by the gods, which he used to drive out the invading Chinese. Later, while boating on the lake, he encountered a giant turtle, which grabbed the sword and carried it down to its depths, returning it to the gods from whom it had come. (You can see a version of the legend at the Water Puppet Theatre.) The giant soft-shell turtles, whom Vietnamese biologists assigned to a separate species, Rafetus leloii, resided in the lake until the early 21st century. One of them, who died in 1968, has been preserved by the wonders of taxidermy, and can be viewed in a glass box (sarcophagus?) in a pavilion adjacent to Ngọc Sơn Temple on the island in the lake.

Many locals view this mini-park as their favourite place because it is a symbol of the integration of modernity and tradition. One might encounter a group of youths practising hip-hop, breakdancing, or playing foot-badminton, while at the same time seeing a three-generation family enjoying a walk in the park.

It has a long history attached to it. Regarded as one of Vietnam’s iconic temples, it was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông. The emperor was childless and dreamt that he met the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who handed him a baby son while seated on a lotus flower. He then married a peasant girl that he had met and she bore him a son. The emperor constructed the temple in gratitude for this in 1049 having been told by a monk to build the temple, by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, similar to the one he saw in the dream. Before the pagoda was opened, prayers were held for the longevity of the monarch. The temple is built of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter, and it is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a Buddhist symbol of purity, since a lotus blossoms in a muddy pond. In 1954, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam after the First Indochina War, it was rebuilt afterwards.

With small but attractive grounds, the temple displays on Vietnamese history and, more memorably, displays on the giant turtles, including a mummified specimen (who died in 1968). The overall design is somewhat similar to the “original” Confucian Temple in Qufu, with 5 courtyards. Most of the architecture is named with titles indicating reverence to literature and language. The showpiece of the complex is the third courtyard with eighty-odd stone tablets, each mounted on the back of a tortoise (known as bixi in Chinese), inscribed with the names of graduates. Another courtyard is full of gift shops, which also sell stamps, coins, and books. A reduced-size replica of the famous giant softshell turtle (the original being at the Ngoc Son Temple at the Lake of the Returned Sword) can be seen in one of the pavilions as well; it was made by Vietnamese artisans out of ceramic, and gold-plated. The fourth courtyard contains a temple and statues devoted to Confucius and his four disciples. Chinese history buffs should look out for the 萬世師表 plaque, which was presented to the temple by Emperor Kangxi of China in 1693. The fifth and last courtyard, which was destroyed by the French in 1946 and rebuilt in 2000, contains a mini-museum showcasing information on Emperor Lý Thánh Tông and his successors who built and renovated the temple. You may find a Vietnamese band playing local instrumental music in front of this museum. There are explanatory wall-hangings in English and French all along the way, and you don’t need a guide.

Built by the French in 1886, the exterior is gaunt and grey, but the interior is light and peaceful. Mass is held several times a day, and for Sunday evening mass at 18:00 the crowds are huge: the service is broadcast to those outside who can’t get in. Major renovation works to maintain the cathedral’s structural integrity and restore its exterior paintwork were completed in 2022.

The building is not open to the public, but you can view it from the outside and take photographs.

Two thirds of the prison was torn down to make way for the Hanoi Towers, and the rest was converted into a museum. This is where the French imprisoned and executed Vietnamese freedom fighters. The museum exhibits the plight of jailed political revolutionaries under the French colonial regime and the struggle of the Vietnamese people against imperialism in chilling detail. Later, during the America-Vietnam War, the prison held US prisoners of war that sarcastically referred to it as the “Hanoi Hilton”. This period is not emphasized, except to present the official narrative of how humanely the POWs were treated, such as showing photos only of prisoners being treated well and playing basketball and playing chess. The museum claims to have the flight suit of John McCain, the most notable POW held here, from when his plane was shot down. Most of the exhibits have detailed English information, but you can also get an audioguide for 50,000 dong.

Hát tuồng is often referred to as classical “Vietnamese opera” influenced by Chinese opera which combines acting, singing, and dancing. Usually, a character’s personalities can be revealed through three features: the color of the face, the eyebrows, and the beard.
In this 1 hour show, the artists will perform most interesting, unique and typical recitals from famous Tuongs (which typically last 1-2 hours). There are many kiosks selling different types of fabrics ranging from cheap, affordable to best quality with a high price. When shopping, take your time and never rush into buying anything. Sellers often quote a very high price that you can bargain down considerably.

Chợ Đồng Xuân (buy) Famous for being the market for wholesalers. They have school supplies, stuffed animals, clothing. It is quite an experience to spend some time in the market observing the sellers and buyers.

Chợ Hàng Da (buy) A 6-storey building to house the market is under construction. All the kiosks are now in the neighbouring area, either on Phùng Hưng (second-hand clothing), Đường Thành, or Lý Nam Đế Streets. Sell a huge range of goods including pets, groceries, prepared foods and fabrics. It is now mostly empty.

Night Market (buy) 🕒 Weekends from 19:00 The major north-south street in the Old Quarter, from Hoàn Kiếm Lake almost to the train overpass, becomes a crowded walking street with everything from pirated DVDs to traditional ornaments. Prices are negotiable, but “foreigner pricing” is fairly common. Thankfully many shops nowadays offer fixed prices with big “no bargaining” signs.

Dù mua sắm thực phẩm vẫn chủ yếu ở chợ truyền thống (xem trên), siêu thị và cửa hàng tiện lợi ngày càng phổ biến hơn. Ngoài các thương hiệu nội địa bình dân và cao cấp, nhiều siêu thị còn có hàng nhập khẩu như hạt hồ trăn và hạnh nhân California, phô mai và rượu vang châu Âu, sô-cô-la, kim chi Hàn Quốc hay snack rong biển Nhật Bản. Các mặt hàng thiết yếu như rau củ tươi hay đậu phụ đôi khi đắt hơn đáng kể so với chợ truyền thống.

Lotte Mart rộng lớn hơn nhưng xa hơn, nằm trong tầng hầm Lotte Center (tòa nhà cao thứ hai Hà Nội; góc đường Đào Tấn và Liễu Giai, cách Hồ Tây vài dãy nhà về phía nam — chữ “Lotte” trên tháp rất dễ nhận), có thể là một trong những siêu thị tốt nhất, với khu vực bánh mì và căng-tin chất lượng. • Nếu muốn chi gấp đôi giá thông thường cho một tuyển chọn hàng nhập khẩu cao cấp từ phương Tây (phô mai Comté Pháp, jamón Ibérico, bia ale Anh), Annam Gourmet có cửa hàng tại Syrena Centre, 51 Xuân Diệu, Tây Hồ — nơi có danh mục phô mai nhập khẩu đa dạng nhất thành phố.

Giá hai chiều

Hầu hết cửa hàng đều niêm yết giá cho khách du lịch (kể cả người Việt từ địa phương khác) cao hơn nhiều so với người dân sở tại, và niềm tin rằng khách du lịch giàu có nên trả nhiều hơn đã ăn sâu vào văn hóa địa phương. Do đó, phần lớn người bán sẽ khăng khăng rằng bạn phải trả giá du lịch và thường từ chối mặc cả xuống mức giá nội địa dù bạn có biết giá đó là bao nhiêu. Nếu có người bạn địa phương tin cậy, bạn có thể tiết kiệm được khá nhiều bằng cách nhờ họ mua hộ khi vắng mặt bạn.

Ăn uống

Món ăn nổi tiếng nhất (và phổ biến nhất) của Hà Nội là phở: “phở gà” (phở gà), “phở bò” (phở bò), hoặc “phở chay” (phở đậu phụ). Đặc sản địa phương nổi bật khác là bún chả — thịt lợn nướng ăn kèm bún trắng, rau thơm và nước chấm.

Có hàng trăm quán ăn vỉa hè nhỏ trên vỉa hè với bàn ghế nhựa ngoài trời. Ăn ở đây là trải nghiệm thú vị để hòa vào ẩm thực và đời sống địa phương. Cần lưu ý rằng chất lượng món ăn, độ tươi và vệ sinh có thể khác nhau đáng kể. Trung bình một bát phở từ 40.000 đến 60.000 đồng (tháng 6/2024), các quầy chợ còn bán trái cây, xúc xích, bánh rán và nhiều món khác. Kiểm tra tiền thối vì một số người bán đôi khi “quên” trả lại, và nên học vài câu tiếng Việt cơ bản vì người bán thường không hoặc biết rất ít tiếng Anh (ví dụ: “bao nhiêu?”, nghĩa là “giá bao nhiêu?”).

Snake Restaurants (eat) The suburb of Le Mat (aka Snake Village) has numerous restaurants specializing in cobra foodstuffs. Live cobras are stored on the premises much the same way one would find live lobsters at a Western seafood restaurant. If one orders cobra blood wine from the menu, the waiter will take a live cobra, kill it on the spot, drain the blood into a shot glass of rice wine and top it off with the cobra’s still beating heart for you to gulp down. Not for animal lovers or the ecologically-minded. Cobras are not cheap, but one snake becomes a dozen unique dishes, and enough to share between 3-4 people. Rượu rắn is cobra steeped whole in rice wine – or, especially in tourist areas, perhaps a cheaper, non-poisonous snake with similar coloring whose body has been stretched to give it the expected shape. Carefully investigate customs restrictions before deciding to bring a few bottles home, as some of the snakes used are endangered species.

Một đặc sản của vùng Hà Nội là thịt chó (thịt chó), đặc biệt phổ biến vào mùa đông. Có nhiều quán thịt chó ở khu Tây Hồ. Một hương vị địa phương độc đáo khác là cà cuống, tinh chất chiết xuất từ con bọ xít nước khổng lồ (belostomatid). Chỉ cần vài giọt nhỏ vào tô bún mang lại hương thơm rất riêng biệt.

Trứng vịt lộn (trứng vịt lộn) luộc chín được bán rong gần như khắp nơi. Người bán sẽ đập vỡ trứng trước mặt bạn, bóc vỏ và đổ phần bên trong vào một cái bát nhỏ, rồi rắc thêm gừng thái sợi, rau răm và nước tương ớt. Nếu may mắn cắn phải chỗ khác, bạn có thể thấy cả đầu và mỏ của chú vịt con.

Hà Nội khá sôi động vào cuối tuần, nhưng khu phố cổ đóng cửa tương đối sớm (vào nửa đêm) các ngày trong tuần, vì vậy hãy bắt đầu tối sớm. Chỉ riêng việc đi bộ đã có thể gây ra cảm giác lo lắng, đặc biệt trong những con phố nhỏ hẹp của phố cổ. Như ở khắp nơi tại Việt Nam, giao thông Hà Nội bị thống lĩnh bởi số lượng xe máy khổng lồ, tất cả dường như đang lao về phía trước với một sự cuống cuồng không bao giờ dứt. Giao thông ngược chiều là chuyện bình thường.

Khi bước xuống lề đường, hãy nhìn không chỉ trái và phải mà cả trước và sau. Thậm chí nhìn lên và nhìn xuống cũng không thừa. Bước đi dứt khoát nhưng bình tĩnh. Kiên nhẫn nhường xe máy đi qua. Không vội vàng, không có những cử động đột ngột. Dừng lại nếu cần, nhưng tuyệt đối không lùi lại. Như vậy tài xế sẽ nhận biết được bạn và dự đoán hướng đi (giống như tất cả xe máy khác). Theo quy tắc chung, xe máy sẽ lách qua bạn, còn ô tô và xe tải thì không. Trông có vẻ hỗn loạn, nhưng kiên nhẫn và chú ý là bạn sẽ ổn.

Lừa đảo và chèo kéo

Hãy cảnh giác khi đi taxi. Đã có trường hợp tài xế nhảy ra ở điểm đến và lấy hầu hết hành lý từ cốp xe. Trong lúc khách đang mang balo lên, tài xế phóng xe đi kèm phần hành lý còn lại. Hỏi khách sạn xem hãng taxi nào đáng tin.

Cẩn thận với những người chèo kéo hung hăng. Tại Việt Nam, tồn tại hệ thống giá hai chiều — một giá cho người địa phương, một giá cho người nước ngoài. Không ở đâu điều này được áp dụng triệt để hơn ở Hà Nội (và chợ Bến Thành ở TP. HCM), nơi người bán định giá dựa trên đánh giá của họ về mức độ giàu có của bạn.

Móc túi

Bạn đã đọc cảnh báo về móc túi cả trăm lần, nhưng hiếm khi nào điều đó đúng bằng ở phố cổ đông đúc chật hẹp hay chợ đêm Đồng Xuân của Hà Nội. Đám đông, lượng khách du lịch lớn, giao thông hỗn loạn gây mất tập trung và không gian chật hẹp tạo ra vô vàn cơ hội cho kẻ trộm. Và quan niệm rằng khách du lịch giàu có tạo ra môi trường đạo đức thuận lợi cho nạn móc túi phát triển. Dù cẩn thận, bạn vẫn có thể bị mở túi ba lô, thậm chí hai lần trong ngày. Chú ý tới phụ nữ móc túi. Đừng để họ bao vây bạn. Câu mở đầu “Hello, tôi là sinh viên” là chiêu thức tiếp cận khá phổ biến của nhóm này.

Sức khỏe

Bệnh viện công thường thiếu trang thiết bị và quá tải, nhân viên ít khi biết tiếng Anh. Người nước ngoài nên đến các bệnh viện tư nhân.

Nếu bạn là người ưa phiêu lưu hoặc đơn giản muốn tạm rời không khí đô thị, hãy thử một vòng khám phá vùng nông thôn phía bắc. Chuyến đi vòng quanh sẽ đưa bạn qua nhiều làng quê thơ mộng, đồi núi và thung lũng hữu tình. Đường chính nhìn chung trong điều kiện tốt và bạn có thể dễ dàng di chuyển vài trăm km mỗi ngày. Các làng và tỉnh thường an toàn về đêm, và bạn sẽ được tiếp xúc với nhiều sắc thái văn hóa Việt Nam như các dân tộc thiểu số. Xe buýt có sẵn (dù không phải lúc nào cũng đúng giờ), nhưng thuê xe máy hoặc ô tô để tự khám phá là lựa chọn được khuyến khích hơn. Xe máy chất lượng ổn được thuê tại nhiều nơi và nhiều nơi có gợi ý về lộ trình.

• Địa mạo karst trên biển ngoạn mục của Vịnh Hạ Long là chuyến đi phụ phổ biến nhất từ Hà Nội.
• Vùng núi Sa Pa gần biên giới Trung Quốc, nơi sinh sống của các dân tộc thiểu số với phong cảnh núi non hùng vĩ và các tuyến trekking kết nối nhiều bản làng nhỏ, là điểm đến phổ biến thứ hai. Cách thủ đô 320 km về phía tây bắc, Sapa có thể đến bằng xe khách thẳng từ Hà Nội — nay chỉ mất 5 tiếng 30 phút nhờ các tuyến cao tốc mới; hoặc đi tàu 8 tiếng từ ga Hà Nội đến Lào Cai, rồi đi tiếp bằng xe minibus hoặc xe máy thuê.

Perfume Pagoda (listing) An ancient Buddhist pilgrimage site about 60 km southwest of Hanoi. A full-day excursion that involves a boat trip to the main site, where you will hike (30-45 min) or take a cable car up a mountain. Near the top is a large limestone cave containing Buddhist shrines and statues. There are various other temples and grottoes along the way.

• Bát Tràng, làng nghề gốm sứ nổi tiếng, cách Hà Nội 9 km về phía đông nam. Có thể đến bằng xe buýt số 47 xuất phát từ Long Biên. Lên xe — xe buýt ghi rõ số 47 và dòng chữ “Long Biên - Bát Tràng”. Đến bến cuối, ngay đối diện với chợ gốm (mặc cả nhiệt tình và nhớ trả bằng đồng). Quay lại đi ngược đường lên phía trên để xem các xưởng sản xuất.

• Cao Bằng, với thác Ban Giốc tuyệt đẹp, cách đây 5 tiếng đi xe buýt, gần biên giới Trung Quốc.

• Vườn quốc gia Cúc Phương, vườn quốc gia lớn nhất Việt Nam, có thể đi về trong ngày từ Hà Nội.

• Cổ Loa là kinh đô cổ xưa nhất trong vùng; địa điểm ít người biết nằm phía đông bắc Hà Nội.

• Tam Cốc/Hoa Lư ở tỉnh Ninh Bình là chuyến đi trong ngày kết hợp du lịch di sản và thiên nhiên. Hoa Lư là kinh đô đầu tiên của Việt Nam vào thế kỷ 10, nơi ở của hai vị vua Đinh Bộ Lĩnh (Đinh Tiên Hoàng) và Lê Hoàn. Hiện còn hai đền thờ hai vị vua này. Cách Hoa Lư khoảng 30 phút là Tam Cốc [ba hang] — còn gọi là Hạ Long trên cạn. Khung cảnh đá karst bao quanh cánh đồng lúa, được khám phá bằng thuyền gỗ nhỏ. Mỗi chuyến đò mất khoảng một tiếng. Đây là lựa chọn thay thế xuất sắc cho Vịnh Hạ Long với những ai không đủ thời gian, vì đi đò chỉ mất một tiếng thay vì 5 tiếng trên thuyền du lịch Hạ Long. Điều phiền nhỏ là có người bán hàng rong trên thuyền và người chèo đò cố bán đồ thêu.

• Đồng Hới, thành phố biển lớn đầu tiên trên đường vào Nam trước Huế, yên tĩnh nhưng có đủ cơ sở hạ tầng cần thiết; không khí thư thái, chân thực và thực sự thân thiện, với ít nhất nửa tá nhà nghỉ bụi, thuận tiện để ghé thăm vườn quốc gia Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng.

• Lào, xe buýt đường dài đi Lào xuất phát từ Hà Nội hằng ngày và có thể đặt tại bất kỳ đại lý du lịch nào hoặc trực tuyến. Đến Viêng Chăn mất 24 tiếng; đến Luang Prabang 27–30 tiếng; đến Vang Vieng 27–30 tiếng (cùng xe đến Luang Prabang, đổi xe ở một thị trấn nhỏ ở Lào). Đi thẳng Vang Vieng là lựa chọn tốt cho những ai muốn bỏ qua Viêng Chăn và đến thẳng Luang Prabang rồi tiếp tục vào Thái Lan. Cũng có xe đến miền Nam Lào.

• Trung Quốc, tàu quốc tế MR1 chạy đêm từ ga Gia Lâm đến Nam Ninh vào lúc 21:20–10:06; tàu MR2 chiều ngược lại từ 18:05–05:30. Vé người lớn khoảng 1 triệu đồng; trẻ 4–12 tuổi giảm 50%, dưới 4 tuổi miễn phí. Nhóm từ 6 người trở lên được giảm 25%.
