Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (tiếng Anh: Ho Chi Minh City), thường được gọi là Sài Gòn (Saigon) hoặc viết tắt là TPHCM, là thành phố lớn nhất Việt Nam (về dân số và diện tích), đồng thời là cố đô của Việt Nam Cộng hòa (miền Nam Việt Nam). Các điểm thu hút du lịch của thành phố chủ yếu gắn liền với thời kỳ Pháp thuộc và chiến tranh Việt Nam. Thành phố có nhiều bảo tàng cùng khu phố Tây ba lô trên đường Phạm Ngũ Lão và Bùi Viện, Quận 1.

Tổng quan

Sau sự kiện 30/4/1975, Sài Gòn được đổi tên thành Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Tuy nhiên, tên cũ Sài Gòn vẫn được người Việt lẫn người nước ngoài sử dụng rộng rãi, đặc biệt khi nhắc đến khu vực trung tâm nơi phần lớn khách du lịch tập trung. Dù thủ đô của Việt Nam thống nhất là Hà Nội ở phía Bắc, TP. Hồ Chí Minh vẫn là trung tâm kinh tế và tài chính lớn nhất cả nước. Tuy không sở hữu bề dày lịch sử như Hà Nội hay Huế, đây lại là thành phố hiện đại và quốc tế nhất Việt Nam, với dấu ấn đậm nét từ thời Pháp thuộc và cộng đồng người Hoa ở Chợ Lớn — điều thể hiện rõ nhất qua ẩm thực địa phương.

Dù Việt Nam đã thống nhất sau Chiến tranh Việt Nam, những khác biệt văn hóa giữa hai miền vẫn còn hiện hữu đến ngày nay. Người dân TP. Hồ Chí Minh thường có tư duy kinh doanh thực tế hơn và ít thiên về chính trị hơn so với người Hà Nội. Người miền Nam cũng có xu hướng hiếu khách và cởi mở hơn với du khách phương Tây. Chiến tranh Việt Nam — ở Việt Nam thường gọi là “Chiến tranh Mỹ” — vẫn là chủ đề nhạy cảm; tốt nhất không nên nhắc đến khi trò chuyện với người địa phương. Không nên nghĩ rằng tất cả người Việt đều có cùng quan điểm, vì nhiều người miền Nam vẫn còn luyến tiếc về kết cục của cuộc chiến.

Lịch sử

Bằng chứng sớm nhất về sự định cư tại khu vực này có từ thời Đế quốc Phù Nam (thế kỷ 1 – 6 sau Công nguyên). Sau khi Phù Nam sụp đổ, vùng đất này lần lượt nằm dưới sự kiểm soát của Chiêm Thành, lúc đó mang tên Baigaur. Với sự trỗi dậy của Đế quốc Khmer, người Chăm dần bị đẩy lui và khu vực này được sáp nhập vào Đế quốc Khmer, đổi tên thành Prey Nokor. Dân số nơi đây phần lớn là người Khmer, tình trạng này kéo dài cả sau khi đế quốc Khmer sụp đổ, mãi đến thế kỷ 17 người Việt mới bắt đầu di cư đến sinh sống. Năm 1698, khi cư dân người Việt đã chiếm đa số, chúa Nguyễn cử Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh vào đây thiết lập bộ máy hành chính, chính thức sáp nhập vùng đất này vào triều Lê. Theo thời gian, Prey Nokor được gọi bằng các tên Gia Định và Sài Gòn — trong đó Gia Định là tên chính thức cho đến khi Pháp cai trị, còn người Pháp gọi là Saïgon.

Sài Gòn bị nhượng cho Pháp theo Hòa ước Nhâm Tuất năm 1862 và trở thành thủ phủ của thuộc địa Pháp Nam Kỳ, bao gồm phần lớn miền Nam Việt Nam ngày nay. Để lại di sản kiến trúc Pháp phong phú với nhiều công trình thực dân nguy nga ở trung tâm thành phố, cùng văn hóa cà phê đặc trưng. Sau khi Việt Nam độc lập năm 1955, Sài Gòn trở thành thủ đô của miền Nam Việt Nam theo chế độ tư bản, còn Hà Nội là thủ đô của miền Bắc Việt Nam cộng sản. Năm 1975, Sài Gòn thất thủ trước quân đội miền Bắc, Việt Nam được thống nhất dưới chế độ cộng sản.

Tương lai

Khu vực Thủ Thiêm nằm ở phía đông sông Sài Gòn đã được giải phóng mặt bằng khoảng năm 2010 để tái phát triển với các tòa nhà cao tầng. Chính phủ dự kiến di dời cư dân Quận 1 sang khu nhà ở mới tại đây, sau đó tiến hành xây dựng lại phần lớn quận này.

Khí hậu

TP. Hồ Chí Minh có khí hậu nhiệt đới với hai mùa mưa và khô rõ rệt. Mùa khô kéo dài từ tháng 12 đến tháng 5. Thời điểm dễ chịu nhất để du lịch là từ tháng 12 đến tháng 2, khi nhiệt độ và độ ẩm đều thấp hơn. Tháng 3 và tháng 4 là những tháng nóng nhất, nhiệt độ có thể lên đến 40 °C (104 °F). Mùa mưa kéo dài, thường bắt đầu từ tháng 5 và kết thúc vào tháng 10, đặc trưng bởi nhiệt độ cao và độ ẩm lớn. Trời nhiều mây là phổ biến, dù nắng vẫn xuất hiện xen kẽ trong mùa mưa.

Ngôn ngữ

Cũng như phần lớn các vùng khác ở Việt Nam, ngôn ngữ chính ở đây là tiếng Việt. Phương ngữ địa phương là giọng Nam, khác phần nào so với giọng Bắc dùng ở Hà Nội, nhưng người nói hai phương ngữ này vẫn có thể hiểu nhau. Người cao tuổi có học thức và tầng lớp trung thượng lưu thường có khả năng giao tiếp bằng tiếng Pháp, tuy nhiên nhìn chung tiếng Anh hiện phổ biến hơn, đặc biệt trong giới trẻ.

TP. Hồ Chí Minh cũng có cộng đồng người Hoa khá đông đảo, tập trung chủ yếu ở Chợ Lớn (Cholon); nhiều người trong số họ sử dụng song ngữ tiếng Quảng và tiếng Việt, và không ít người cũng biết tiếng Phổ thông. Sau tiếng Quảng, tiếng Triều Châu là phương ngữ Hoa được sử dụng phổ biến thứ hai ở TP. Hồ Chí Minh.

Bạn có thể đến trung tâm thành phố bằng taxi, nhưng xe buýt tiết kiệm hơn nhiều. Có nhiều tuyến buýt và tất cả đều có máy lạnh. Buýt 152 là xe buýt nội thành, giá vé 5.000 đồng (hành lý thêm 5.000 đồng), tần suất 15 phút/chuyến. Buýt 109 là xe buýt nhanh, giá vé 20.000 đồng (hành lý thêm 20.000 đồng), tần suất 45 phút/chuyến. Nếu đi từ sân bay vào thành phố, bạn có thể mua vé tại nhà ga. Nếu đi từ thành phố ra sân bay, mua vé từ nhân viên soát vé trên xe.

Có năm chuyến tàu xuất phát mỗi ngày từ (và đến) Hà Nội trên tuyến “Thống Nhất”. Dù một số chuyến được gọi là “tốc hành”, toàn bộ hành trình đều mất 30–35 giờ. Chuyến nhanh nhất là SE3, khởi hành từ Hà Nội lúc 23:00 và đến nơi lúc 05:00 hai ngày sau.

Vừa xuống xe, các tài xế taxi sẽ bu lại hỏi “Đi đâu đó?” Bạn có thể chưa định vị được vị trí của mình trong thành phố, và một số tài xế sẽ lợi dụng điều đó. Thực tế bạn thường đã ở khu vực Phạm Ngũ Lão rồi, và khi bạn nhờ tài xế đưa đến đó, họ có thể lòng vòng qua vài con phố để tăng cước.

Đi lại

Di chuyển trong TPHCM không phải là điều đơn giản: giao thông ùn tắc hầu hết các giờ trong ngày, cái nóng và phố xá hỗn loạn khiến việc đi bộ đường dài rất vất vả, còn hệ thống vận tải công cộng chưa bắt kịp tốc độ phát triển bùng nổ của thành phố.

Bằng tàu hỏa

Tuyến metro đầu tiên của TP. Hồ Chí Minh chính thức khai thác từ tháng 12/2024, nối Chợ Bến Thành ở trung tâm với Suối Tiên và Bến xe Miền Đông mới ở phía Đông Bắc. Hiện tại tuyến này chủ yếu phục vụ di chuyển ngắn trong nội ô, nhưng trong tương lai sẽ có mạng lưới 8 tuyến metro hoàn chỉnh.

Vé tính theo quãng đường, dao động từ 7.000 đến 20.000 đồng. Bạn có thể thanh toán bằng cách chạm thẻ Mastercard hoặc Visa không tiếp xúc vào cổng soát vé, bao gồm cả Apple Pay và Google Pay. Vé ngày và vé tháng có thể mua qua ứng dụng HURC. Vé lượt, vé ngày, vé 3 ngày và thẻ thông minh nạp tiền được bán tại máy bán vé ở tất cả các ga.

Tàu chạy mỗi 8–12 phút, từ 5 giờ sáng đến 10 giờ tối, hành trình toàn tuyến khoảng 30 phút. Hầu hết các ga đều trên cao, riêng 3 ga nằm dưới lòng đất. Tất cả các ga đều có thang cuốn và thang máy phục vụ người khuyết tật, biển báo và thông báo song ngữ Việt–Anh. Nhiều ga còn có bãi gửi xe đạp. Để đến thẳng Chợ Bến Thành, dùng Cửa 3 tại ga Bến Thành. Để đến Trạm trung chuyển xe buýt Hàm Nghi, dùng Cửa 6 tại ga Bến Thành.

Bằng tàu thuyền

Saigon Waterbus khai thác tuyến đường thủy trên sông Sài Gòn từ Quận 1 lên TP. Thủ Đức ở phía Bắc thành phố. Dịch vụ này phục vụ chủ yếu dân đi làm hàng ngày hơn là khách du lịch, nhưng có một bến dừng gần khách sạn Majestic, thuận tiện để kết hợp tham quan Nhà hát Thành phố và các điểm trung tâm khác.

Bằng xe buýt

Xe buýt màu xanh lá và xanh dương tươi, cùng xe buýt kết nối metro màu xanh mòng két, phục vụ hơn 170 tuyến trên khắp TP. Hồ Chí Minh. Xe buýt là phương tiện di chuyển rẻ và an toàn, thường không quá đông trong giờ thấp điểm (9 giờ sáng đến 4 giờ chiều). Hầu hết xe buýt đều có máy lạnh, ghế đệm và thông báo tên trạm.

Tìm đúng tuyến xe buýt có thể khá khó nếu bạn không biết tiếng Việt. Để biết lộ trình và điểm đến, bạn có thể xem thông tin in sẵn tại trạm dừng hoặc hỏi nhân viên tại các bến xe lớn. Đừng ngại hỏi tài xế, nhân viên soát vé hoặc nhân viên khách sạn — người địa phương sẵn lòng giúp nếu bạn hỏi lịch sự.

Bạn có thể dùng website chính thức của cơ quan quản lý xe buýt để lập lịch hành trình và theo dõi xe theo thời gian thực. Google Maps cũng là lựa chọn đáng tin cậy, hiển thị số tuyến, tần suất và điểm đến. Ngoài ra, bạn có thể gọi đường dây nóng 1022, bấm phím 9.

Vé tính theo quãng đường, từ 5.000 đến 7.000 đồng cho tuyến nội thành, từ 10.000 đến 50.000 đồng cho tuyến liên tỉnh. Thanh toán bằng thẻ Mastercard hoặc Visa không tiếp xúc tại thiết bị soát vé, bao gồm Apple Pay và Google Pay. Nếu có hành lý hoặc vật dụng cồng kềnh, bạn có thể bị yêu cầu mua thêm vé.

Xe buýt chỉ dừng tại các trạm chính thức. Khi thấy xe đến, bạn cần vẫy tay để xe dừng. Lưu ý xe buýt thường không dừng hẳn mà chỉ chạy chậm lại vừa đủ để khách lên xuống — điều này đặc biệt phổ biến ngoài khu trung tâm. Xe có thể dừng hẳn hơn nếu thấy người cao tuổi hoặc đông khách. Giờ cao điểm, xe thậm chí có thể dừng giữa đường nếu không vào được lề. Mỗi chuyến xe thường có hai nhân viên: tài xế và nhân viên soát vé. Nhân viên soát vé sẽ nhắc bạn xuống đúng trạm nếu bạn cho họ xem hành trình trên điện thoại. Để báo hiệu xuống xe, hãy tìm và nhấn nút “Dừng” khi sắp đến điểm đến.

Người địa phương cho rằng xe buýt đôi khi còn nhanh hơn taxi vì thường được ưu tiên nhường đường trên phố ở TPHCM. Điều bất tiện nhất là khi xuống xe bạn phải di chuyển tiếp bằng chân. Nếu để quên đồ trên xe, bạn có thể đến bến đầu hoặc cuối tuyến để lấy lại. Hầu hết xe buýt đều có camera giám sát, hữu ích khi cần xác minh tài sản thất lạc hay sự cố. Luôn giữ chặt đồ đạc, đặc biệt lúc đông người, để tránh móc túi. Phần lớn xe buýt ở Việt Nam không có lối đi dành cho xe lăn.

Bằng taxi

Cách thuận tiện nhất để đi taxi hoặc xe ôm là dùng các ứng dụng gọi xe phổ biến: Grab (Android, iOS), Xanh SM (Android, iOS) hoặc beTaxi (Android, iOS). Giao diện tiếng Anh với tính năng tìm kiếm địa chỉ rất tiện dùng, giá cước cố định và thường rẻ hơn chút so với taxi thường, thanh toán được bằng tiền mặt hoặc thẻ tín dụng.

Bằng taxi đồng hồ

Taxi đồng hồ rất nhiều và thường không khó để bắt ở khu trung tâm từ sáng sớm đến khoảng 1 giờ sáng, tuy nhiên khó tìm hơn khi trời mưa hoặc giờ cao điểm.

Giá cước taxi không do thành phố quy định, tạo cơ hội cho một số tài xế tùy tiện tính giá cao với khách nước ngoài. Khách du lịch nên ưu tiên đi Mai Linh và Vinasun — hai hãng lớn nhất — vì nguy cơ bị chặt chém ở các hãng khác cao hơn đáng kể. Hãy đảm bảo tài xế bật đồng hồ khi lên xe — nếu không, cứ xuống xe. Cả hai hãng đều có ứng dụng smartphone để đặt xe.

Xe thường là Toyota Vios (tối đa 4 khách) và Toyota Innova (tối đa 6 khách), lắp ráp tại Việt Nam với giá thành hợp lý. Cước phí hầu như bằng nhau với mọi dòng xe, chỉ những xe lớn hơn Innova mới tính thêm. Một số xe cũ có thể không có điều hòa hoạt động tốt.

Tài xế taxi thường lái nhanh khi có cơ hội. Kẹt xe giờ cao điểm rất tệ nên tốt nhất hạn chế di chuyển trong khung giờ 7:00–8:30 và 16:30–18:00.

Tài xế thường không nói tiếng Anh, vì vậy hãy chuẩn bị sẵn tên và địa chỉ điểm đến viết bằng tiếng Việt để chỉ cho họ, và mang theo danh thiếp khách sạn phòng khi bị lạc đường.

Đối với các chuyến đi ra ngoài thành phố hoặc cần xe riêng cả ngày, thuê xe có tài xế là lựa chọn tốt. Nhiều hãng taxi như Mai Linh và Vinasun đều cung cấp dịch vụ này.

Bằng xe ôm

Xe ôm (xe ôm, nghĩa đen là “xe ôm”) có mặt khắp nơi (bạn sẽ quen dần với câu hỏi “xe ôm không anh/chị?”), nhưng nếu bắt xe ôm ngoài đường một cách ngẫu nhiên, bạn rất dễ bị chặt chém. Để tránh bị lừa, hãy dùng ứng dụng gọi xe như Grab hoặc be. Đây là cách di chuyển rẻ và an toàn nếu bạn tránh được tình trạng bị lừa.

Hãy thỏa thuận giá trước khi đi. Đi ngắn trong phố không nên quá 20.000 đồng; đi sang quận khác thì giá cao hơn, và ra sân bay khoảng 70.000 đồng. Tài xế thường khá thân thiện và sẵn sàng đi chậm lại nếu bạn yêu cầu.

Nhiều tài xế xe ôm, đặc biệt ở Quận 1, biết một ít tiếng Anh và như nhiều người Việt khác, họ sẽ rất vui vẻ và hào phóng khi bạn cố gắng trò chuyện với họ.

Bằng xích lô

Xích lô không hẳn là phương tiện thay thế taxi, nhưng ngồi xích lô dạo phố Sài Gòn là cách tuyệt vời để cảm nhận nhịp sống của người địa phương. Xích lô giống như chiếc xe ba bánh ngược, hành khách ngồi ở phía trước và người đạp ở phía sau. Những âm thanh, hình ảnh và mùi hương đặc trưng là một phần hấp dẫn của thành phố, và không gì thưởng thức chúng tốt hơn là nhịp điệu thong thả trên chiếc xích lô.

Cũng có những công ty tổ chức tour đạp xe khám phá TP. Hồ Chí Minh theo cách chân thực nhất. Jackfruit Adventure cycling tour company cung cấp tour xe đạp đưa bạn đến những góc phố bình dị ít ai biết như Quận 4, 5 và 10.

Cẩn thận với máy ảnh, túi xách và đồng hồ khi đi xích lô vì những thứ này dễ bị giật bởi kẻ cướp đi xe máy.

Vì nhiều lý do, không kém phần quan trọng là chính sách hạn chế xích lô trên các tuyến phố đông đúc, loại hình vận chuyển này đang dần mai một. Nhưng với giá khoảng 50.000 đồng/giờ (tháng 1/2019) và tốc độ nhàn nhã, xích lô vẫn là lựa chọn thú vị để khám phá thành phố. Hãy mặc cả kỹ với tài xế trước khi lên xe. Một số tài xế có tiếng hay đổi giá lúc kết thúc hành trình. Thủ thuật khác là dừng lại tự ý tại các cửa hàng nơi tài xế được hoa hồng. Để tránh những tình huống này, hãy thống nhất rõ giá và điểm đến ngay từ đầu.

Bằng xe máy

Bạn có thể thuê xe máy (thường gọi là Honda dù thuộc bất kỳ hãng nào) ở nhiều nơi, đặc biệt quanh khu Tây ba lô (Phạm Ngũ Lão) ở Quận 1. Khoảng 110.000 đồng là thuê được một chiếc xe số 100–110cc tạm ổn. Xe ga đắt hơn.

Lái xe ở Sài Gòn nên dành cho người đã có kinh nghiệm. Giao thông dày đặc và có nhịp điệu riêng khó đoán. Người chưa quen nên chọn xe ga (thường đắt hơn một chút) vì ở các ngã tư đông đúc không có thời gian để lo chuyển số.

Cảnh giác kẻ trộm: luôn để mắt đến xe máy hoặc gửi xe có người trông. Hầu hết nhà hàng đều có nhân viên giữ xe phía trước, phát cho bạn thẻ số và trông xe giúp. Các bãi gửi xe tự phát cũng có ở lề đường, hẻm và tầng hầm khắp thành phố. Nhận biết qua những hàng xe máy xếp gọn hoặc biển giữ xe.

Bằng xe đạp

43 trạm xe đạp công cộng được lắp đặt trên vỉa hè dọc các tuyến đường lớn như Lê Lợi, Hàm Nghi, Nguyễn Huệ, Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai và Lê Duẩn quanh khu vực quận, mỗi trạm có gần mười chiếc xe.

Xe đạp được trang bị khóa thông minh và định vị GPS, vận hành qua kết nối 3G, 4G hoặc Bluetooth.

Người dùng tải ứng dụng TNGO trên điện thoại để tìm trạm gần nhất và đăng ký thuê xe, sau đó quét mã QR để mở khóa. Giá thuê là 5.000 đồng cho 30 phút hoặc 10.000 đồng cho một giờ.

Đi bộ

Qua đường ở TPHCM có thể là cơn ác mộng và rất đáng sợ. Nếu phân vân, các nhân viên “An ninh Du lịch” của TPHCM (mặc đồng phục xanh lá) sẵn sàng hỗ trợ bạn qua đường. Cách nhanh hơn là cứ đi theo một người địa phương đang qua đường.

Cảnh sát giao thông chủ yếu kiểm tra ngẫu nhiên ven đường và thường không xử lý xe máy vượt đèn đỏ hay chạy lên vỉa hè. Tuy nhiên, họ đã tăng cường xử phạt người đi bộ vi phạm đèn đỏ. Điều này không có nghĩa là bạn sẽ bị làm phiền, nhưng bạn có thể bị quy trách nhiệm nếu xảy ra tai nạn.

Một số xe máy dùng vỉa hè để tránh kẹt xe, vì vậy đừng coi vỉa hè là nơi an toàn tuyệt đối. Luôn chú ý xe từ phía sau.

Outside, on the museum grounds, you will find cars and military vehicles of historical significance. The museum also relates the life of the modern-day father of Vietnam. It was South Vietnam’s presidential palace. The war ended on 30 Apr 1975 when Tank 843 crashed through the gate. A replica of that tank is now parked on the lawn outside. Be sure to check out the aggressively 1960s recreation room on the third floor, featuring a circular sofa, and the eerie basement, full of vintage 1960s phones, radios and office equipment, supposedly left exactly as it was found when the North took over. There is also a photo gallery and a propaganda film recounting how the South Vietnamese supporters and American imperialists succumbed to Ho Chi Minh’s indomitable revolutionary forces, at which point the South Vietnamese supporters were forgiven and everyone lived happily ever after. Free guided tours and an audio guide are available (90,000 dong). The audio guide is extremely informative, but not necessary. There is a nice outdoor café on the grounds outside the palace.

This disturbing display of man’s cruelty during the Vietnam (American) War includes halls full of gruesome photographs, a simulated “tiger cage” prison and jars of deformed foetuses attributed to contamination by Agent Orange. An exhibit on the 3rd floor tells the story of the war journalists from all over the world who documented, and often disappeared or died in the war. Watch out for the amputees who will try to sell you their wares on the museum grounds, though largely their wares take the form of only somewhat overpriced books on historical topics relevant to the museum, and are less of a scam than more of an informal gift shop. There are two cafes on the street that are a nice stop for coffee while exploring a newly-purchased book. The centre of the street often has art exhibits or special displays and there is a stage that is occasionally used to hold live talk shows and other events. Book selection is often curiously limited, with many of the books in English being safe business and self-help titles, or obviously touristic in nature.

Due to its popularity with tourists, the market is now divided between tourist goods (jeans, T-shirts, smaller souvenirs in abundance) and regular items (fruit and vegetables, rice, kitchen wares, flowers, meat, fast food and local-style pickled fruits). Most items are not price-marked, and vendors always quote a 50-100% higher price to tourists, so bargaining hard will save you money. Bargaining is common in traditional markets. Feel free to negotiate the price before purchasing items. The chief method of parting visitors from their money is ambiguity: for example, never making it quite clear how much you are being quoted or what the exact price is or what exchange rate is being used to calculate your change. Be ready for these ruses (often by a sweet, smiling young lady), or be prepared to part with more cash than you need to. At the north side (back) of Ben Thanh Market are some shops that are operated by Ben Thanh Group and they sell goods at fixed price and much cheaper than the stalls in the market. No bargaining needed. If the good selection of knock-offs here just won’t do, there’s plenty to be had in the surrounding side street shops or night market later. If retail warfare isn’t your cup of tea, you could skip the touristy Ben Thanh altogether and go to Chợ Bình Tây.

Do not rely on this market for military surplus gear that can stand up to serious use, even boots sold here are often low quality knockoffs that will quickly break. Bạn sẽ không thiếu lựa chọn ở Sài Gòn — thành phố có sự đa dạng ẩm thực Việt Nam và quốc tế lớn nhất cả nước. Tuy nhiên, món ngon giá rẻ ngày càng khó tìm hơn, và giá nhà hàng đang tăng đến 30%/năm do giá thực phẩm leo thang, lương tăng và tiền thuê mặt bằng tăng vọt. Giá đất trung tâm thành phố hiện ở mức khoảng 16.000 đô Mỹ/m², nên một nhà hàng cỡ vừa cũng đang ngồi trên mảnh đất trị giá hơn một triệu đô. Ẩm thực địa phương đúng chất với giá hợp lý vốn là niềm tự hào của Việt Nam, nhưng ở Sài Gòn điều đó ngày càng khó tìm hơn khi thành phố ngày càng hiện đại và quốc tế hóa.

Ẩm thực địa phương mang đậm dấu ấn thời Pháp thuộc. Các tiệm bánh mì bán bánh mì baguette nóng giòn, có thể kẹp phô mai (thường là “La Vache Qui Rit” hay “Laughing Cow”), patê, giăm bông, hành, hoặc tùy chọn kết hợp, với giá rất phải chăng. Thịt bò xuất hiện trong nhiều món — từ các biến tấu của phở đến đặc sản địa phương như bún bò Huế. Ngoài phở, nhất định phải thử bún bò Huế hay bánh xèo — một loại bánh crepe mặn giòn rụm với nhân phong phú gồm giá, nấm kim châm cùng thịt, tôm, hoặc cả hai.

Cộng đồng người Hoa cũng để lại dấu ấn đậm nét ở TP. Hồ Chí Minh, và khu Chợ Lớn vẫn còn nhiều cư dân gốc Hoa, trở thành điểm đến lý tưởng để thưởng thức ẩm thực Trung Hoa đã được biến tấu cho hợp khẩu vị người Việt. Dù vậy, đồ ăn Trung Hoa cũng rất phổ biến trong giới thượng lưu Việt Nam, nên cũng có nhiều nhà hàng Trung Hoa cao cấp khắp thành phố.

Nếu tìm đồ ăn halal, hãy đến các con hẻm trên đường Dương Bá Trạc, Quận 8, gần Thánh đường Jamiul Anwar — nơi có đông đảo người Chăm Hồi giáo sinh sống và nhiều quán ăn bán đồ halal theo phong cách đường phố Việt Nam. Một khu vực trung tâm hơn là đường Nguyễn An Ninh gần Chợ Bến Thành, với nhiều nhà hàng Malaysia và Indonesia halal phục vụ cộng đồng người nước ngoài.

Hạn chế của việc ăn hàng vỉa hè hay các quán nhỏ ở bất kỳ thành phố nào ở Việt Nam là vấn đề vệ sinh. Người bán hàng vừa nấu ăn vừa thu tiền, chạm vào tiền rồi lật tờ tiền bằng ngón tay thấm nước bọt. Bánh mì hay baguette rơi xuống đất có thể được nhặt lên và trộn lại với phần còn lại. Người bán có thể ho, hắt hơi, lấy tay che miệng rồi tiếp tục làm việc. Đồ ăn đôi khi có tóc hay vật lạ. Tại các quán nhỏ hẹp, nếu thiếu mặt bằng, thức ăn đựng hộp đặt dưới sàn. Sàn thường ướt và bẩn. Dụng cụ được rửa ngay trên sàn. Nhân viên phục vụ ném đũa đã dùng và bát đĩa vào thùng — nếu không vào thì rơi xuống sàn rồi nhặt lên sau. Rau và thịt cũng được cắt dưới sàn, nếu rơi xuống cũng nhặt lại. Số lượng lớn rau được đặt trong xô nhựa và rửa bằng vòi nước trong nhà vệ sinh. Prices start around 40,000 dong for a basic cuppa, although there are plenty of variations including the infamous weasel coffee (cà phê chồn), made from coffee beans collected from civet excrement; however, a quick Google search about the conditions in which the civets are kept may further dissuade some from sampling.

Đừng bỏ qua những quán nhậu vỉa hè luôn tấp nập người địa phương lẫn khách du lịch, nằm khoảng giữa đường Bùi Viện. Bia Sài Gòn ở đây chỉ 10.000 đồng/chai. Ngồi trên những chiếc ghế nhựa nhỏ và tận hưởng bầu không khí thân thiện. Đây có lẽ là chốn nhậu lý tưởng nhất cho dân ba lô: vừa rẻ vừa dễ gặp gỡ mọi người, không chỉ khách du lịch.

You have to ask for happy pop, though if you’re spending enough it’ll sometimes get an outing. Like most Saigon bars, it attracts its share of working girls. If you’re not interested, simply say you’re not and you’ll be left alone.

Nhìn chung, TP. Hồ Chí Minh là thành phố khá an toàn, tội phạm có bạo lực như cướp có vũ trang tương đối hiếm. Các tội phạm phổ biến nhất mà du khách gặp phải là móc túi và giật đồ từ xe máy.

Nạn lừa đảo xảy ra trên đường phố TP. Hồ Chí Minh. Một người sẽ bắt chuyện với bạn, tự xưng đã gặp bạn ở sân bay hay một điểm du lịch nào đó mà họ làm việc. Thường họ đi cùng các thành viên gia đình, những người sẽ tham gia cuộc trò chuyện rất tự nhiên, và khi biết bạn đến từ đâu, họ sẽ đề cập đến việc một người thân sắp chuyển đến thành phố của bạn. Bạn sẽ được mời về nhà ăn cơm để an ủi một bà ngoại lo lắng hoặc tư vấn cho thành viên gia đình. Nhưng khi đến nơi, người thân đó lại chưa về, hoặc bà ngoại đột nhiên phải đi bệnh viện. Bạn sẽ được chào mời các cơ hội kinh doanh, hợp pháp hay không, hoặc được xin hỗ trợ tài chính cho bà ngoại bị ốm đột xuất.

Lừa đảo ở khách sạn rất phổ biến, kể cả ở phân khúc tầm trung 20–70 đô. Khách sạn sẽ nhắc bạn gửi đồ có giá trị vào két an toàn trong phòng hoặc két khách sạn. Hãy khóa kỹ mọi thứ có giá trị.

Đừng cầm đồ đắt tiền trên tay khi đi ngoài đường hay để chúng trên bàn khi ăn, đặc biệt ở Quận 1, nhất là khu Tây ba lô. Cướp vặt rất phổ biến, thường do người đi xe máy thực hiện. Cách phòng ngừa đơn giản là đừng tạo cơ hội cho kẻ trộm.

Đừng mua SIM trước khu vực xuất nhập cảnh ở sân bay vì họ tính đến 10 đô một SIM. Sau khu vực hải quan và lấy hành lý, bạn sẽ tìm thấy các quầy bán SIM với giá chỉ 6 đô. Một chiêu lừa quen thuộc là người bán bắt chuyện, nhờ bạn cầm thử đòn gánh để chụp ảnh, và trong lúc bạn không chú ý, họ mở sẵn một quả dừa mà bạn không hề xin.

Cảnh giác với chiêu lừa thường gặp: có người tiếp cận bạn với cớ cung cấp dịch vụ nhạy cảm nhưng thực chất nhằm móc túi. Giữ chặt đồ có giá trị và cẩn thận khi người lạ bất ngờ tiến lại gần.

Bệnh viện công thường thiếu trang thiết bị và luôn quá tải, nhân viên y tế phần lớn không biết tiếng Anh hoặc biết rất ít. Vì vậy, người nước ngoài nên ưu tiên đến các bệnh viện tư nhân. Bệnh viện FV do người Pháp quản lý, là bệnh viện tư nhân uy tín nhất Việt Nam với tiêu chuẩn điều trị tương đương phương Tây, đội ngũ bác sĩ và y tá có thể giao tiếp bằng tiếng Pháp và tiếng Anh. Các bệnh viện phổ biến khác với người nước ngoài bao gồm Bệnh viện Quốc tế City, Bệnh viện Quốc tế Mỹ, Prima Saigon Medical Center, Bệnh viện Đa khoa Quốc tế Nam Sài Gòn và Bệnh viện Đa khoa Quốc tế Vinmec Central Park.

You need to fill form N14/M with your details and the one of your sponsor, either a hotel or private house and get a stamp from the police station corresponding to its location. This point could be tricky as it implies that you have register at the police station before. If not, expect extra delay (5 or more days, for example) or cost. Quick processing (2 days) is possible, but you need to justify it. Going through travel agents costs about USD30, but they manage the police stamp whatever your situation is (extra fee of USD20 for quick processing). Other prices: single entry visa USD25, multiple-entry USD50-100, change single-entry visa to multiple-entry for 6 months USD25-75, modification/extension of visa USD10. This office will tell you that you must use an agent if you wish to extend a tourist visa.

Khi đến sân bay, hãy nói rõ nhà ga bạn cần đến. Chuyến bay quốc tế xuất phát từ nhà ga quốc tế mới (đi thẳng). Chuyến bay nội địa (đến Đà Nẵng, Hà Nội, Nha Trang, v.v.) xuất phát từ nhà ga nội địa (rẽ trái). Nếu bị thả nhầm nhà ga, bạn sẽ phải chạy sang nhà ga đúng qua đường đi bộ nối dài 600 m — không nên để xảy ra, đặc biệt khi sắp trễ chuyến.

Khi vào cổng sân bay, tài xế taxi sẽ tính thêm phí vào cửa sân bay 5.000 đồng vào tổng cước. Đừng nhầm lẫn với thuế sân bay, đã bao gồm trong giá vé máy bay.

Nếu đặt xe buýt quanh khu Phạm Ngũ Lão, nên mua vé trực tiếp tại văn phòng của hãng xe buýt thay vì qua các đại lý trung gian. Hãng xe FUTA có văn phòng tại góc Phạm Ngũ Lão/Đề Thám (tòa nhà xanh cam) và bán vé rẻ hơn khoảng 1/3 so với mua qua đại lý.

Tránh đặt tour qua khách sạn vì bạn sẽ phải trả thêm phí đáng kể trong khi vẫn tham gia cùng các tour có thể đặt trực tiếp tại hàng chục đại lý du lịch khắp thành phố.

• Cần Giờ — rừng ngập mặn nguyên sinh cách thành phố 30 km về phía Nam. Cổng vào khu bảo tồn nằm gần Cầu Cá Cấm.
• Cần Thơ — thành phố lớn nhất vùng Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long, nổi tiếng với chợ nổi, ẩm thực đặc sắc và hoa quả tươi ngon. Tên gọi bắt nguồn từ “cầm thi giang” — sông của thơ ca. Thành phố còn được gọi là “Tây Đô”. Cần Thơ cách TP. Hồ Chí Minh 169 km (khoảng 3 giờ). Bạn có thể mua vé tại bến Lê Hồng Phong, Quận 3, rồi đi xe buýt miễn phí đến Bến xe Miền Tây, nơi xe khách máy lạnh xuất bến. Vé đến Cần Thơ khoảng 100.000 đồng. Xe buýt miễn phí ở Cần Thơ đưa bạn đến thẳng khách sạn.
• Địa đạo Củ Chi — các đại lý du lịch quanh khu Phạm Ngũ Lão chào mời tour đến đây không ngừng, có thể đi nửa ngày hoặc trọn ngày với điểm dừng tại Tây Ninh để tham quan Tòa Thánh của đạo Cao Đài. Giá tour bao gồm vé vào cửa khoảng 70.000–110.000 đồng, có lịch mỗi ngày trong tuần. Địa đạo Củ Chi cách trung tâm TPHCM khoảng 1,5 giờ chạy xe. Nhất định nên đến để tận mắt khám phá những công trình địa đạo kiên cường được đào ngầm dưới đất trong thời chiến. Một cách để đến địa đạo là đi tàu tốc hành.
• Đà Lạt — thành phố nghỉ dưỡng trên cao do người Pháp xây dựng, với khí hậu mát mẻ mang phong vị châu Âu giữa núi rừng. Nên đi qua Vườn quốc gia Cát Tiên để ngắm động vật hoang dã (linh trưởng, chim quý, cá sấu) và cảnh quan rừng nguyên sinh hùng vĩ.
• Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long — tour du thuyền với vô số hành trình linh hoạt theo sở thích, từ chuyến ngắn qua đêm đến hành trình thong thả nhiều ngày. Tour 2–3 ngày khám phá Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long rất đáng thử; dọc đường bạn sẽ được chuyển qua nhiều công ty tour. Các chuyến 2 ngày 1 đêm có giá chỉ từ 25 đô, bao gồm vận chuyển, hướng dẫn viên, chỗ nghỉ và một số bữa ăn.
• Mũi Né — khu nghỉ dưỡng biển nổi tiếng, cách khoảng 4–6 giờ xe buýt
• Nha Trang — điểm đến biển, có thể đến bằng tàu hỏa qua đêm
